LA RAZZA

TITOLO

The background and history of the Black Russian Terrier in Italy is younger than in other nations. The distance between the breed’s home country and ours, the problems related to importing from Russia and the lack of relations with countries outside the borders of the USSR, did not help the spreading of the breed. The first Italian breeder who showed his interest in BRTs was Marco Galli (Lisander kennel), he had seen some subjects at the World Dog Show in Brno in 1989 and it was love at first sight. He bought two BRTs born in Czechoslovakia and grew them up with his Airedale Terriers. The two BRTs were imported the same year and were registered in the Italian stud books in 1990. Their names were Asta Nocni Boure and Cerkas z Ro-Da-Gu: they can be considered the pillars of Italian breeding. Especially Cerkas who, thanks to his awards and his winning for two years running (1991 and 1992) the World Dog Show, was very often sired in these first years and had his name in many Italian pedigrees. In 1990 Henry Petitjean (Spartacus Kennel) purchased the male Char directly from  the Russian Army Kennel. Shortly after, in 1991, Maria Sofia Allegranza Bulhak Jelski (Dorambra Kennel) imported Toro Doro Jantros, a male, from Poland.

Up to 1996 the Russian satellite Countries acted as a link with the breed’s homeland and Italy. In the area of the “Warsaw Treaty” it was possible to breed with subjects coming from Russia, sometimes brought by the Army, getting genealogical certificates valid for the F.C.I. This happened in Hungary, Poland and, above all, in Czechoslovakia. This last country was a true reservoir where fanciers could find dogs and bitches. It seldom happened for Italian breeders to purchase dogs form Germany and France. From Czechoslovakia we had subjects from the kennels: “Jasny Cil”, “Nocni Boure”, “Ro-Da-Gu”, “Apes”, “Ca-Ko”, “Altheyrosei” e “Temny Stin”. Amongst these we had dogs making a name for themselves. As Cerkas z Ro-Da-Gu previously, Carlos Nocni Boure in 1994 and Elmar Nocni Boure in 1996 won the World Championship. Elmar Nocni Boure also won the European Championship in 1998, whilst Art Temny Stin won the European Youth Championship in 1996.

In Italy the first BRT puppies were born in 1992 in two different kennels, Lisander and Spartacus. A few months later Massimo Telatin (Grandi Ombre Kennel), Walter Mosna and Pierluigi Gozzer, Maria Sofia Allegranza (Dorambra Kennel), Massimo Bruni (Settima Musa Kennel) and Giusy Bertolini started breeding the BRT. They are the ones who produced the highest number of litters in these last years.

The good quality of subjects they had imported and skilled mating gave interesting and remarkable results. In 1994, in Bern, Lisander Hardboy got his World Youth Championship, in 1999, in Tulln, Felicia della Settima Musa won her European Youth Championship, while in Oporto in 2001, Neposeda Ant became World Youth Champion. In 1998 Eliovittorini won his “all breeds top junior of the year” and in 1999 he won the BIS during the International Dog Show in Dornbirn, Austria. This dog, bred by Walter Mosna and owned by M. Poli, is the dog who numbers the most important awards amongst those bred in Italy: he has won several championships in 5 different countries and is international champion.

In January 1996 we had the first subject from Russia allowed to be registered in the Italian Book of Origin: Kuzina Olex iz Chernoi Stai, imported by Marco Galli. Since then Italian breeders have established excellent contacts with Russian breeders like Ekatarina Abrachina, Galina Jachenko, Olga Vorobjova, Svetlana Turkina, thus having the opportunity to get subjects who improved the standard of the breed in Italy. To mention the most important: Pearl Russia Uljiana, European Champion in 1998; Moskworechie Antey, Youth European Champion in 1998; Grushenka, who unfortunately died young, in 1998 European Champion and World Youth Champion; Fantastica iz Peredelkino World Youth Champion in 2001.

During these years the dogs imported in Italy belonged to different morphological types. Some dogs tending to the brachymorphic type (subjects with very large chests and shoulders in relation to body length, sturdy appearance, well developed short muscles, short legs) like the litters from Les Lavr and from his beautiful daughter Rozal Rad. Eestiless Gamin, a son from her by Leon, has revealed himself as a very interesting Italian sire. On the other hand some dogs were leaning to the dolycomorphic type (subjects with a slim figure and long slender legs), like puppies from Anton Dar Ros and Ruslan Remark. A son from Ruslan Remark, Moskvorechie Antey, contributed to the improvement of  Italian breeding. On their part, Russians have succeeded in producing an interesting mix of both types, one of the most remarkable results being Jashka Malahovskiy iz Russkoi Dinastii. In Italy both bloodlines are available and good results have been obtained.

Subjects owned and bred in Italy are not up to Russian quality (however, considering the number of registered dogs it is not easy to imagine a different situation), but they are good competitors to dogs in other countries and they very often win: results from the last years in the most important shows have been confirming our efforts.

Today BRTs in Italy number something over 500. From 1992 to 2000 we had 78 litters, from which 451 puppies were born and duly registered. The breed is facing popularity averaging 60 dogs per year, 65 in 2000, 96 in 2002. From 1989 to 2000 we also registered 79 imported dogs while from 2001 to 2007 we have the global subscriptions (we presuma from litters only). In 17 years, from 1990 to 2007, there are 971 subscriptions.(2008 and 2009 subscription are going to be update by ENCI)
